Union Report

We strongly encourage you to read the stories to help stay informed about education news that impacts our students, our profession, and our future. Last month I had the opportunity to speak with Senator Murphy about high stakes testing and the re-authorization of ESEA, formerly No Child Left Behind. Below are ways to make your voice heard, and you can also email SBAC@cea.org with your feedback regarding Smarter Balance.

LIGHT IT UP BLUE!

Hello Darien Public Schools!

As many of you know, April 2nd will be the 8th annual World Autism Awareness Day and the Darien Education Association would like to encourage everyone to “Light It Up Blue” to show our support for this amazing cause.

How outstanding would it be if at every school in town: all the teachers, students, administrators, custodians, cafeteria workers, secretaries, nurses, paraprofessionals, EVERYONE were wearing blue to show our support and raise awareness?

What if that blue spread not only through the seven schools in town but also to Central Office and to all the members of the Board of Education?  Envision our entire school community wearing blue to show how important this day is in our town.

The entire month of April is dedicated to Autism Awareness and we encourage you to go to www.autismspeaks.org to find additional ways to have an impact.

What better way to come together then for the support of something so worthy?  So spread the word!  Administrators, teachers, students, Board of Education members, paraprofessionals, custodians, cafeteria workers, secretaries, nurses, EVERYONE involved in the Darien Public Schools…on April 2nd strut your stuff and LIGHT IT UP BLUE!

 Sincerely,

Darien Education Association

DEA Social – DEA Humanitarianism

Are you planning to run in Hartford in October? Or even thinking about it? A 5K? Half-Marathon? Marathon? Or do you have three friends and would like to form a relay team? If so, consider joining other educators from DEA who are running and help raise funds for CEF. The Hartford Marathon is a wonderful event with strong community support. Weather is generally seasonably cool, and there is a wonderful presence in Bushnell Park to support the runners – a food tent, a beverage tent, numerous vendors giving out freebies, and lots of other runners enjoying the day.
The Connecticut Education Foundation is a non-profit, charitable foundation that was established in 1991 to help teachers and children with extraordinary personal hardships and students planning teaching careers. You can put it out there in your school and on your social media sites – whatever you can raise, is money well spent.

Teachers from all over the state are participating, and it would be great to connect and help out from our own local here in Darien. The attached flyer contains the details from the Connecticut Education Association, including the following way to get $5.00 off your registration. Hartford_Marathon_Information

If your commitment is firm, please follow instructions to register directly on the Hartford Marathon page.at http://www.hartfordmarathon.com/Events/NU_Hartford_Marathon.htm Use this discount code to receive $5.00 off your registration fee: CTEDUCFDN (all CAPS, no spaces)
